Back Off the Wagon!

My drinking habits have been severely disturbed the past year! Why, you ask? Well, it all started out when I got pregnant last November, miscarried in December, was pregnant again in January, and celebrated the birth of our son, Samuel Liberty 4 weeks ago! Being pregnant completely changed the drinking part of our lifestyle, but that was okay because the result was definitely worth the sacrifice.

Now that I’m not pregnant or breastfeeding, I’m back to being the only one depending on what goes into my body. Know what that means? That means I get to drink again! Sure, I had some sips of wine here and there while I was pregnant, and a careful glass or two for the short time that I breastfed, but it’s all me now…just like it was for the first 40 years of my life! All of these transitions take practice, you know. It’s not easy to make sudden, drastic changes in one’s lifestyle, but considering the circumstances, I did it.

It’s been an interesting trip and I’m back in the saddle. With a newborn at home now, it’s not as easy for us to just get up and go to wineries, events, and parties but we’ve been making up for it by having lots of family and friends over to the house to visit little Sammy and help us get through some of our wine reserves.

I think that’s one of the keys that we’ve been learning over the last weeks; we don’t have to give anything up, we just have to be flexible and think outside of the box. We can still socialize and do our thing without running around the Central Coast 24/7. Now, don’t get me wrong, we’ve already had Sammy out on the wine trail with us, but we’re easing in to that routine. We go with the idea that we might have to make a quick getaway at any moment. He’s a terrific baby and has been great every time we’ve had him out, but sooner or later he’s bound to pitch a fit just when we’re settling in to a nice glass of something downtown.

Cut back to the “being flexible” thing, that includes our outings. So, just when you thought we might be out of the game because of our little one, it’s just the opposite! We’re gaining new skills and tactics with bringing him along on our adventure. We’ll be back into the swing stronger than ever before you can say “Cheers”!!!
